Bears Early Fruit

(February 20, 2007) Memphis, TN - The Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau will host a large group of European journalists this weekend, from February 23 rd to the 28 th, on a 50 Years of Soul media tour. 19 journalists in all, the group represents five different countries and a total circulation rate of over 15 million. A few of the media organizations represented in this tour include MOJO, Sunday Express, De Telegraaf, Time Out, Revolver, BBC Radio 4 and The Sun.

This is one of the largest media groups we’ve ever hosted, and to think they’ve come all this way (from Europe) to join the 50 Years of Soul Celebration, it says a lot about this city’s ability to draw people,” says Kevin Kane, CEO and President of the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This visit will no doubt generate positive coverage of Memphis for years to come.”

The goal of the 50 Years of Soul marketing and public relations campaign is to increase national and international awareness of Memphis as one of the most unique music cities in the world. “This campaign continues to reinforce the city’s identity, and drive consumer demand for Memphis as a travel destination,” said Regena Bearden, Vice President of Marketing.

Focusing on the city’s soul music legacy, the media tour will include an intimate panel discussion at the Stax Museum with Sir Mack Rice, John Rye and Larry Nix, as well as a guided tour of the museum with David Porter. In addition, the journalists will conduct interviews with various Memphis soul legends, enjoy a live soul show in Studio A, and attend Staxtacular, Soulsville’s largest annual fund-raiser, hosted by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Rounding out the trip, the group will visit Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, Graceland, Sun Studio and the National Civil Rights Museum, local barbeque and soul food establishments, and Wild Bills on Saturday night.
